Soft, buttery holiday sugar cookies decorated with smooth green and white icing for a classic festive look.
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk
For the icing:
2 cups powdered sugar
2–3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Green gel food coloring
1. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
2. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and milk until fully combined.
4. Gradually add dry ingredients to form a soft dough.
5. Divide dough in half, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
7. Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into desired shapes.
8. Bake 8–10 minutes or until edges are just lightly golden; cool completely.
9. Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to form a smooth icing; divide and tint one portion green.
10. Pipe or spread green and white icing onto cooled cookies in festive patterns.
11. Allow icing to dry fully before storing or stacking.
Add more milk to thin the icing or more sugar to thicken.
Chill dough shapes for 10 minutes before baking to maintain crisp edges.
Use a squeeze bottle or piping bag for cleaner designs.
