2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
3 tablespoons milk
Red royal icing
White royal icing

1. Whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a medium bowl.
2. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
3. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until combined, adding milk to bring the dough together.
4. Wrap dough and chill for at least 1 hour.
5. Roll chilled dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out stocking shapes.
6. Transfer cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet and chill 10 minutes to prevent spreading.
7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes, then cool completely on a rack.
8. Outline cookies with red and white royal icing, then flood and decorate as desired.
9. Allow icing to dry fully before stacking, storing, or packaging.
